Madison's Farmers' Market Leaves the Square Soon. Here's Where Your Saturdays Go Next.

October 22, 2026

From early November to Jan. 2, the Dane County Farmers' Market moves from the Capitol Square to Monona Terrace and then to Garver Feed Mill. Along the way it changes its hours, skips two Saturdays and adjusts parking. This year the holiday stretch at Monona Terrace is also a week shorter than it was in 2025. If you shop by habit, the next two months will catch you off guard more than once.

Here is the calendar from the first change to the last, plus what's different at each stop.

Wednesday Goes First

The first change comes midweek. The Wednesday Market on the 200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. runs 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and ends its season on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026. After Oct. 28, that leaves one Wednesday market.

There's no indoor Wednesday market listed after that. Once Nov. 4 passes, every DCFM market through spring falls on a Saturday. If you shop midweek, your routine ends a full ten days before the Saturday market leaves the Square.

Ten Saturdays, Three Addresses, Two Gaps

Here is the run as DCFM lists it, starting Saturday, Oct. 31:

  1. Oct. 31, Nov. 7 and Nov. 14: Saturday on the Square, 6:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Nov. 14 is the last outdoor Saturday of the 2026 season, which opened April 11.
  2. Nov. 21: The Holiday Farmers' Market opens at Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center, 1 John Nolen Drive, 7:30 a.m. to noon.
  3. Nov. 28: No market. DCFM says it will not be open that Saturday.
  4. Dec. 5: Monona Terrace, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is the one Saturday the indoor market runs an extra hour.
  5. Dec. 12 and Dec. 19: Monona Terrace, 7:30 a.m. to noon.
  6. Dec. 26: No market.
  7. Jan. 2, 2027: The Winter Farmers' Market opens at Garver Feed Mill, 3241 Garver Green, 8 a.m. to noon, and runs every Saturday through April 3, 2027.

That's ten Saturdays from Oct. 31 to Jan. 2. Eight have a market, at three different addresses, and the last three venue moves come in a seven-week span.

The Morning Gets Shorter

The hours change more than the address does. The Square market runs 6:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., a seven-and-a-half-hour window. At Monona Terrace that drops to four and a half hours on a normal date, and Garver's 8 a.m. to noon window is four hours.

The late-morning slot goes away entirely. An 11:30 arrival on the Square in October still leaves more than two hours of market. At Monona Terrace it leaves half an hour, and at Garver an 8 a.m. start means even early risers wait longer for the doors to open.

Supply is part of this too. DCFM describes itself as a producer-only market whose vendors "are limited by their production and harvest yields," and it warns they "may sell out before the close of Market." Indoors, the same rule still limits what's available. Sales are restricted to Wisconsin agricultural items the vendor actively produces, and craft-type items aren't allowed. DCFM lists the holiday market at more than 60 vendors. If a holiday table, a specific cheese or a particular baker's loaf matters to you, a shorter window plus sell-outs adds up to an early start.

A Holiday Run That's One Saturday Shorter Than 2025

Last year's calendar went differently. WMTV reported in November 2025 that the outdoor season ended Nov. 8 and the holiday market ran five Saturdays at Monona Terrace: Nov. 15 and 22, then Dec. 6, 13 and 20. Dec. 6 had the same extended 1 p.m. close.

In 2026 the Square stays open a week longer, through Nov. 14, and the holiday market starts a week later, on Nov. 21. Because Nov. 28 is dark, Nov. 21 is the only indoor November date. The holiday market totals four Saturdays this year instead of five.

The tradeoff runs in two directions. This year you get one more outdoor Saturday in mid-November and one fewer Monona Terrace Saturday before the holidays. If you've counted on two November indoor dates to stock up for Thanksgiving, as the 2025 calendar allowed, only Nov. 21 is left this year, five days before the holiday.

Dec. 5 Is the Busiest Saturday at Monona Terrace

DCFM says it is extending hours on Dec. 5 "so customers have more time to visit the Fair Trade Holiday Festival next door."

Madison's Fair Trade Holiday Festival is back at Monona Terrace on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival describes itself as "next door to the Dane County Farmers Market," with vendors "vetted to ensure their products are ethically and humanely produced." Monona Terrace's event calendar lists it as the 30th annual festival, sponsored by the Center for Community Stewardship.

The two events overlap from 8 a.m. until the market closes at 1 p.m. One trip covers groceries and gifts in the same building that morning, and the festival keeps going for two hours after the market vendors pack up. Of the four holiday Saturdays, Dec. 5 has the most going on at Monona Terrace and the longest market hours.

Each Venue Has Its Own Parking and Pet Rules

When the venue changes, the logistics change with it. DCFM lists these details for each stop:

Capitol Square Monona Terrace Garver Feed Mill
Dates Through Nov. 14, 2026 Nov. 21, Dec. 5, 12, 19 Jan. 2 to April 3, 2027
Hours 6:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. 7:30 a.m. to noon; 1 p.m. on Dec. 5 8 a.m. to noon
Parking Downtown ramps and street meters On-site garage, $5; metered spots by the main entrance 100+ free on-site spots; free nearby options 3 to 5 minutes' walk
Bike access Downtown routes Bike elevator from the Capital City Trail Capital City Trail passes directly by
Pets See DCFM rules Not permitted Not permitted, including carried dogs

Some of these details are easy to miss. At Monona Terrace, if you come in from W. Wilson St. and bear right instead of entering the garage, there are metered spots on both sides of the main entrance. Ample bike parking is available, and there's an elevator up from the lakeside Capital City Trail to the main floor. The building has elevators at both ends.

At Garver, DCFM says the free on-site lot "fill[s] up quickly" and asks that those spots go first to patrons with limited mobility. It "greatly encourage[s]" everyone else to use the free nearby options. The accessible entrance is on the north side of the building, next to six accessible parking stalls. DCFM spells out the pet rule at Garver: no pets, "This includes dogs which are being carried."

Garver Changes Which Side of Town Is Close

Over the winter the market also moves across the city. Monona Terrace sits on the lakefront a block from the Square, so downtown and isthmus routes still work through December. In January the market moves out to Garver Green, off S. Fair Oaks Ave. DCFM's directions from downtown run outbound on East Washington to Milwaukee St., then a sharp right onto S. Fair Oaks.

For east side households, January through early April may be the shortest market trip of the year. For anyone who has walked to the Square since April, the Garver months involve a drive, a bus or a trail ride. DCFM points out that the Capital City Trail passes directly by Garver Feed Mill and suggests riding in layers.

Once the Winter Farmers' Market opens Jan. 2, it runs every Saturday at the same address with the same hours through April 3, 2027.
